2017 Mercedes-Benz AMG C63 S Coupe

Move over Audi S5 and BMW M4 coupes as automotive enthusiasts can now drive a class-leading four-place coupe with SuperCar performance including a luxurious and sporty interior thanks to the all-new 2017 AMG C63 S.  My test S coupe can fully loaded featuring the exterior carbon fiber package that puts the finishing touches on this SuperCar.

Athletic and sporty, flared front/rear fenders, an increased track width, larger wheels/tires and lower splitter, gives the C63 S coupe a muscular look while also providing a basis for highly agile longitudinal and lateral dynamics.  The vivid, sensual design cuts a fine figure on the road and embodies modern luxury.  Its lightweight construction, excellent aerodynamics, and a dynamically configured chassis with air suspension, form the basis for a high level of suspension comfort, agile handling with the sheer enjoyment of driving pleasure. 

The striking front section features the brushed aluminum M-B wing, diamond radiator grille, open air vents to cool the engine and brakes, M-B Intelligent LED headlamps/DRLs, and a long, double-creased hood; the new coupe is 2.4 inches longer than before between the firewall and front axle giving way to a low greenhouse whose lines flow into a bold and powerful looking rear end with LED taillights, and four black AMG rectangular tail pipes.  A high beltline, steeply-raked A-pillars, blacked-out trim around the frameless doors include carbon fiber capped/heated/self-dimming aero-styled exterior mirrors that underscore its sporty character.  A highlight from the silhouette is the long, drawn-out dropping line typical of a coupe.  While some reviewers might not like the dropping line, I think it works fine giving the AMG C63 S coupe a more distinctive look. In contrast to the C-Class sedan, the dropping line extends further past the rear wheel arch.  The optional AMG carbon fiber package includes a front A-wing, side sill inserts, rear diffuser insert and a truck lid spoiler.  To underscore the coupe’s sporty disposition, the suspension is 0.6 inches lower than that of the sedan, making it a very sporty scheme when combined with the staggered, black 19 inch front and 20 inch rear AMG specific wheels wrapped around sticky Michelin Conti-Sport Pro Contact low profile tires, 255/35ZR front and 285/30ZR rear.  From any angle, the all-new AMG C63 S coupe looks mighty and luxurious, just what I expected from M-B and AMG.

That SuperCar style is backed by a 4.0 liter, handcrafted, AMG 4.0 liter aluminum alloy twin-turbo V8 with DOHC and Direct Injection.  It makes 503hp at 5,500-6,200rpm and 516 pounds of torque at 1,750-4,500rpm, enough to zoom out to 60mph from a standstill in just 3.8 seconds.  The auto-stop/start system enhances fuel mileage.

All of this power is transferred to the rear wheels via a super-fast-acting AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed transmission with paddle shifters.  Quick gear changes make this the ideal SuperCar transmission.  It also features an AMG electronic Limited-Slip Differential that keeps the tremendous power down on the pavement. The quad exhaust system features AMG’s Dynamics with a dual-mode for sound-just push a console mounted button on the center console to change from a beautifully sounding burble to a screaming wild banshee sound.  Steering is a two-mode, speed dependent, electro-mechanical rack & pinion setup with AMG steering assist when just cruising or by pushing another console-mounted button for more feel for the road with excellent response to your inputs. 

It is so much fun and exciting to drive the AMG C63 S with the AMG sport-tuned, fully independent suspension utilizing tauter springs and an AIRMATIC air suspension.  It’s electronically controlled, continuously adjustable damping ensures outstanding road noise and tire vibration characteristics in every situation g you the option of selecting the DYNAMIC SELECT switch via a console-mounted roller to dial-to your desired driving style-Track/Sport+/Sport/Comfort/Individual.  Individual allows you to customize any of the vehicle settings.  AIRMATIC also features all-around self-leveling for excellent ride comfort even with the vehicle loaded.  The front suspension also features a new 4-link setup with a decoupled spring strut that plays a part in the agile handling.  This enables a sporty with plenty of grip and high lateral stability. 

The rear features 5-links ensuring excellent wheel location qualities and supreme straight-line stability.  Both front and rear setups include tubular torsion bars.  The ride is stiffer than on non-AMG models but never harsh.  Intelligent lightweight construction with a higher proportion of aluminum helps make the coupe light.  Light-alloy components include the fenders, hood and trunk lid.  At the same time, the body is now much stiffer and stronger thanks to the use of high-strength materials, which has a positive effect on not only driving dynamics and noise levels but also crash safety.

Giant SuperCar brakes ensure quick, safe slowdowns.  Brake feel is very linear, the harder you press on the pedal the stronger the braking force.  Up front are 15.4 inch rotors clamped down by 6-piston AMG calipers while 14.2 inch rear rotors are clamped by 2-piston AMG calipers.  Each rotor is vented, slotted and drilled for non-fading abilities during high-speed maneuvering and track times.




 The brakes feature ABS, BA and EBD to ensure straight-line control when braking hard.  All of these high-tech mechanical/electronic abilities are packaged into the all-new AMG C63 S coupe like never before and so much fun to drive!

The larger interior is part sport and part luxury not forgetting the M-B heritage of spirited driving and top-of-the-line luxury and safety.  The doors open to reveal lighted AMG chrome kick plates, a terrific-feeling flat-bottom, AMG 3-spoke, beefy, power-tilt/telescopic/leather-wrapped with Alcantara/DINAMICA trimmed steering wheel. The interior is completely made from hand-sewn leather  with accent stitching, 15-way power/heated, high-backed, perforated Nappa leather AMG specific front seats with memory, AMG instrument cluster, carbon fiber center stack/center console with dual-cupholders, dual-zone climate control with Ionizing scents, Burmester Surround-Sound audio system, IWC quart clock, KEYLESS-GO with push button start/stop, rain-sensing wipers/washers, Central Controller with 7-inch color display, panoramic sunroof, 40/20/40 split-folding rear seats, front seatbelt presenters, alloy foot pedals, adaptive cruise control, self-dimming rearview mirror, dual map lights, Sirius Satellite radio, front seatbelt pretensioners, rear dual cupholders, dual lighted vanity mirrors, and an integrated garage door opener.

Optional equipment in my test AMG C63 S coupe included head’s-up display, AMG black cross-spoke forged aluminum wheels, Active Blind Spot Assist, COMMAND navigation and Sirius traffic/weather, Touchpad, 8.4 inch hi-res screen, power folding mirrors, electronic trunk opener, hands-free access, PRE-SAFE Plus, AIR BALANCE, DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active LED headlights, Adaptive Highbeam Assist, Reconfigurable Ambient Lighting, Front/Rear Sensors, PARKTRONIC with Active Parking Assist and a Surround View Camera.  The remote trunk opener has the ability to open the trunk by moving your foot underneath the bumper.

Standard safety systems not mentioned above include Advanced Airbag Protection System, 3-Stage Electronic Stability Program (ESP), ADAPTIVE BRAKE TECHNOLOGY, COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUST ATTENTION ASSIST, 360-degree Rear Camera, Tire Pressure Monitor, High Strength Steel Reinforced Cabin, and an Anti-Theft Alarm System.  The price as tested is $93,885.00.
