SAMA’s August meeting drew 56 members and guests to Smith & Wollensky’s on Miami Beach for a preview of the dazzling 2015 Cadillac ATS Coupe.

David Masch, chief engineer for Performance Luxury Cars, gave the presentation, said that Cadillac is on a growth plan “trying to broaden our appeal and the ATS Coupe really helps with that.”

The sedan version of the ATS, an all-new model for 2013, brought 70 percent of new customers to Cadillac, Masch said, “so we’re continuing to look for more opportunities like that.

“We’ve really been appealing to young people,’ he said, and with its with its sharp styling and a choice of two engines, including a 2.0-liter turbo that bumps torque up to 295 pound-feet (20 more than in the V6), the ATS Coupe should do that.

Before the presentation, Kim Carpenter, Group Manager for East Coast Communications for GM, made three key announcements.

One is that Lesley Warnke of the GM’s Atlanta communications office has a new job to work on “women’s initiatives and military outreach” and will be moving to Detroit.

Her replacement has been named, but the official announcement won’t be made until later. When he is — Kim did reveal it was a male — he will be based in a new Miami office, not Atlanta.

And in another key personnel change, Stephanie Ruiz is leaving the Axis Agency for another “professional growth opportunity.”

In business matters, Vice President Paul Borden presided and announced GM will be the sponsor of SAMA’s annual Miami International Auto Show awards luncheon on media day Nov. 7, though what brand will be represented has not yet been determined.

He also announced that Ron Beasley, who has led the auto show judging committee for the last five years, is stepping down and Secretary Pepe Delfino and Board Member Jaime Gabaldoni have agreed to take over that job.

In the time Ron has served, his group has been in the forefront of choosing automotive winners with the annual “Star of the Show” winner from Miami going on to receive many honors and similar recognition by other national organizations.

Treasurer Marcello Serrato announced that the treasury is in good shape with $1,800 in the account following June’s annual Topless in Miami, and he also said we have three new members.

Jose Gonzalez, who was a previous member, has rejoined us and his colleague at Tempus Automotive Group/GT Exotics, Marcelo Callagari, is a new member. The third new member is Grant Roberson of WCS-TV Channel 22.

We want to thank Cadillac for sponsoring our August affair and a thanks to all the members who made this one of the larger turnouts of the year.

Please continue to check your email for updates on the September luncheon.
