Kia previews 2016 Sorento at January luncheon to kick off new year

Over 40 members and guests gathered at the Rusty Pelican Jan. 29 to kick off SAMA’s 2015 luncheon schedule.

Kia sponsored the event with Michael Sprague, executive vice president for sales and marketing, providing an overview of the company’s tremendous growth since its arrival in the U.S. two decades ago as well as previewing the 2016 Kia Sorento.

As it moves into its third generation, the Sorento gets a new 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine to go with the standard 2.4-liter four-banger and the 3.3-liter V6 that is standard on the SX trim and available on EX and SX Limited models.

The Sorento was the featured vehicle in Kia’s Super Bowl ad starring Pierce Brosnan of James Bond fame with the theme “The Perfect Getaway.” It was the company’s No. 3 seller for 2014 behind the Optima (154,000-plus and Soul (145,000) with over 80,000 sold.

Before the preview, President Bill Adam presided over the business session, calling 2014 SAMA’s biggest year yet.

Rides-and-Smiles drew 151 children from Miami Children’s and Baptist Children’s Hospitals plus over 90 Wounded Warriors in late November, and despite a rainy day, the auto show at the Homestead Air Reserve Base drew many Air Force reservists and families and featured the new Dodge Challenger Hellcat taking on an F16 fighter jet.

Bill is looking at changing the date for the next Rides-and-Smiles from November to February.

Vice President Paul Borden said the changes instituted for 2014 made the annual Topless in Miami competition go smoothly, and a date change also is in the works for this year for Topless. If possible, it will be in late May instead of June.

Treasurer Marcello Serrato announced that taxes for 2014 have been taken care of, and dues are starting to trickle in. Individual press dues are $100 per year, and corporate press memberships covering 2-4 individuals are $200 per year.

Marcello also announced the addition of four new members: Pablo J. Crocetti of Grinta Publishing, Kelly Boyd of Homestead-Miami Speedway, Jim Waimsley of Carrusel 69.com/Vanidades.com, and Whitney Gonzalez Be Car Chic.com.

And in a key announcement, President Adam said an arrangement has been made with BMW for a motorcycle testing event to be set up sometime next month for those who have the proper license endorsement and legitimate media outlets.
