SL63 AMG ON DISPLAY AT JULY LUNCHEON
By Paul Borden - July 19th, 2012

Mercedes-Benz debuted the fantastically beautiful SL63 AMG for SAMA’s July meeting at the Dutch restaurant in the W Hotel in South Beach.

The car went on sale a week earlier and is a lighter and more powerful version of the previous SL63.

The 2013 model is marks the sixth generation of the model that began as a “Super Light” race car in the 1950s and became a classic with introduction of the 300SL with its distinctive gull-wing doors in 1957.

It has lost 275 pounds from the 2012 version of the SL63 AMG, thanks to its aluminum body shell, and is even more powerful.

Its standard 5.5-liter V8 engine is rated at 530 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque.

For the first time, it is being offered with an upgraded Performance Package with a V12 engine that increases those figures to 557 hp and 664 lb.-ft., which results in a slightly quicker zero-to-60 time (4.1 seconds to 4.2 for the V8) and a top speed of 186 mph over 155.

And the interior is impeccable.

“Every detail is detailed to the nth degree,” said SL Product Manager Dave Larsen, who delivered the presentation.

We want to thank Dave for taking the time out of his schedule to preview this remarkable roadster and to our Mercedes friends Adam Paige and Lindsay Burns, who made the luncheon possible.

Before the presentation, Secretary Tony Lesesne presided over a brief business session in the absence of President Jaime Florez, who was away on business. (Vice-President Bill Adam remains on his annual stay in Canada, where he is enjoying 70-degree temperatures in the day and 50-degree nights with only 30 percent humidity.)

Our webmaster, Pepe Delfino, reported a record number of contributors to the website for the month with 19 members submitting articles, pictures, and videos. Visit the site and see the work your fellow members are contributing.

Remember, Pepe has it set up that when a reader clicks on the link for your story or video, he or she is sent directly to your site for the rest of the story, so samaonline.org is another way for you to gain exposure for your business.

Treasurer and Membership Chairman Marcello Serrato reported the names of six new members: Marcelo Fleubry of Yo Llamo, Tatiana Martins of Motion TV, Alejandro Saldivar of Grinta Publishing/Queautomecompro.com, Dan Scanlan of www.car-data.com/Jacksonville Times-Union/Auto Trend, Harvey Schwartz of Automotive Addicts/Zuma Press, LACar.com and Execdigital.com, and Federico Versan of TOPCARUSA.

Marcello also noted that our luncheon calendar is now filled with sponsors for the rest of the year.

Ron Beasley, who heads up judging committees for the auto show as well as our annual Topless in Miami competition, asked that any member who served as a judge for the 2011 show who wants to take part again get in contact with him.

The South Florida International Auto Show press day is Nov. 9 at the Miami Beach Convention Center, which means that judging will take place the place the day before to choose a “Star of the Show” and other awards.

Paul Borden asked that members who took part in the second annual Topless in Miami contact him if they have any suggestions to help make the 2013 event even bigger and better. We are particularly interested in any comments regarding the categories for awards.

Again, we want to thank Mercedes-Benz for its support of SAMA and for sponsoring the July luncheon. It was another success!

Check your emails for the time, date, and place for our August luncheon.
