Mention Mercedes-Benz and SAMA luncheon and you immediately know it will be a superb, world-class event.

Celebrating the second anniversary of SAMA, the March 2009 lunch was graciously hosted at the uber-chic Mondrian Hotel in Miami Beach by Mercedes-Benz and its superb staff headed by Geoff Day and,  as Geoff likes to call him, his teleprompter, Gregory O’Shea. Thank you, gentlemen, and Mercedes-Benz for a spectacular event.
The day started off with a bay-side terrace cocktail in which 45 SAMA members and guests schmoozed, followed by the presentation of the brand new addition to their exclusive “Black Series” portfolio.

The SL65 AMG Black Series is the latest addition to the legendary SL line. How about these eye-popping numbers: 0-62 mpg in 3.8 seconds, 670 hp from a 12-cylinder, bi-turbo engine. It's priced at $320,000.

Driving this stunning super-car up to the hotels’ porte-cochere, was none other than Sir Stirling Moss, looking fit and trim for nearly 80 years of age, Sir Stirling has 16 victories as well as 19 fastest laps in  66 Grand Prix races among other competitions with one of the most memorable being the legendary victory of the 1955 Mille Miglia at the wheel of the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR. Today he is considered a  gentleman of motor racing and is a popular guest at historical motorsport events.

Moving up to the roof-top suite, we where greeted by expansive panorama views of the ocean and South Beach. Lunch was a culinary delight, with a buffet of jumbo prawns and Florida Stone Crabs as well  as roast beef and salad.

Paul Borden, SAMA’s Vice-President, headed the meeting as President Ron Beasley was away. Since the election of officers held in February, Ron Beasley has decided he does not want to continue serving for a third term and has announced he will be stepping down on July 1. There will be another election and the board will be creating ballots as well as detailed job descriptions. We will be accepting nominations at a future meeting.

The board is in the process of talking with Al Vinikour about publishing a membership directory. Many members probably know Al, and he puts together these directories for other automotive groups such as
ours. The directories include industry contacts as well as group members, and there may be opportunities for local members to advertise in there as well. We will be sending out forms later for each SAMA
member to check their listing in order to make sure we have all the correct and updated information.

Pepe Forte has a new radio show. “Auto Mania, where cars meet the microphone” on AM 1140 every Sunday from noon to 1 p.m. Tune in!
Guillermo de la Corte announced an upcoming event on April 5 at the Homestead-Miami Speedway. Formula and Automobile Racing Association (FARA), a Pro-Am organization in its third consecutive championship

season, provides a true racing experience, with intense competition, in a world- class environment. Combining decades of experience in the world of Road Racing, FARA is becoming the most
popular Pro-Am Racing league in the Southeast.
Since the meeting, we have coordinated with Ford to host the next luncheon on April 16. We will gather at noon at the Biltmore in Coral Gables, and there will be a ride-and-drive after the luncheon, so plan accordingly. Keep your eye out for a e-mail to confirm the details.

SAMA again wants to thank Mercedes-Benz and everyone who attended the March 2009 SAMA luncheon. See you all in April!
