2018 Toyota Camry

2018 Toyota CHR

Toyota was the sponsor for our March luncheon held Friday, March 24, at the Broward County Convention Center in Fort Lauderdale with more than 30 members in attendance for the 10th anniversary of the founding of the Southern Automotive Media Association.

Elliot Schorr, District Sales Manager for Southeast Toyota Distributors, previewed two new Toyota models, the 2018 Toyota CH-R, a subcompact crossover, and the fully redesigned 2018 Toyota Camry, and members had the opportunity to check out both that were on display at the annual Fort Lauderdale Auto Show for the first time in South Florida.

In introducing Schorr, Christie Caliendo of Southeast Toyota Distributor noted the importance of the South Florida market to Toyota, noting that the Southeast U.S. accounts for 20 percent of Toyota sales in the nation and South Florida accounts for 20 percent of that.

Its absolutely no joke how important South Florida is to our brand, she said.

A video of the complete presentation is available here on the website or on Youtube.

With President Jaime Florez called away by the governor at the last minute for an event and Secretary Eduardo Hapke unable to attend because of a virus that has been going around, Vice President Paul Borden presided over a brief business meeting (also available on video).

He reminded members that the annual Topless in Miami Presented by Haartz competition is set for June 1 at the Ritz-Carlton Resort in Key Biscayne.

John Kiskinis announced that winners from the event once again will be featured in a special display at the annual Miami International Auto Show. He also announced that the dates for the Miami show will be Sept. 9-17 at the Miami Beach Convention Center with Media Day on Saturday, Sept. 9.

Treasurer Marcello Serrato announced that the balance for the treasury is $5,675 and that did not include some checks he received the day of the luncheon. Some people, however, still have not paid dues for 2017 and that must be done before the April luncheon.

Pepe Delfino, who continues to build on the SAMA website, thanked members for their contributions and said that the site has been getting an average of 500 visitors a day and 15,000 a month, a significant development for us.

Members are encouraged to check their email for details of the April luncheon.
